VIU volleyball teams start year by winning four straight

Mariners women come back to win five-set thriller during PacWest action in Nanaimo

Vancouver Island University’s volleyball teams got the new year off to a strong start with four wins in four tries this past weekend at the VIU gym.

The Mariners women’s and men’s v-ball teams resumed Pacific Western Athletic Association action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20, with matches against the Douglas Royals.

The M’s women started things off the first match of the weekend with a three-set victory against the Royals, 31-29, 25-11, 25-23, but were pushed to the five-set limit in the following afternoon’s rematch, falling behind two sets to none before coming all the way back to win 19-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-13. VIU’s women have opened up a lead on the rest of the PacWest, pushing their record to 10-2.

As for the Mariners men, they earned a hard-fought four-set win Friday, with scores of 27-25, 27-25, 24-26, 25-22, and then won the rematch in straight sets, 25-23, 25-11, 25-21.

VIU’s men are 9-3, second in the PacWest.

GAME ON … The Mariners teams head off this week on their longest road trip of the season, as they will play the College of the Rockies Avalanche in the Kootenays on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27. Next home action for the M’s is Feb. 9-10, when the Capilano Blues visit.
