VIU’s basketball teams won all their games on home-opening weekend and are off to perfect starts in the PacWest.
The Vancouver Island University women’s and men’s hoops squads swept the Capilano Blues in Pacific Western Athletic Association action at the VIU gym on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26-27, to improve their respective records to 4-0.
It was a special weekend for the Mariners women, who started things off by raising their Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship banner from 2022-23. They then proceeded to defeat the Blues 60-55, and followed that up the next night in more convincing fashion, winning 68-41.
Kaia Simpson led the way in the first game with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Chloe Scaber added 11 points. In the blowout win, Mackenzie Cox scored 16 points, Makayla Kimble added 11 and Katelynn Forner pulled down nine rebounds.
In men’s action, the M’s were 91-82 winners in their home opener, led by Adam Anhold who scored 26 points to go with eight rebounds. Ryan Bastion scored 18, Kaeleb Johnson added 13 and Jakob Poulton dropped in 12. In the next night’s rematch, VIU won 82-65, with Anhold scoring 26 points and adding 13 boards and Johnson scoring 15.
GAME ON … The Mariners visit the Okanagan Coyotes on Nov. 3-4. Next home action for VIU’s basketball teams will be Nov. 24-25 when the Camosun Chargers stop by.
