Nanaimo Clippers coach resigns after code of conduct violation

Interim head coach was involved in ‘non-physical incident’ with opposing player last weekend

The Nanaimo Clippers’ search for stability behind the bench continues.

The club announced this week that Curtis Toneff, who had been interim head coach, has resigned his position.

According to a club press release, Toneff “was involved in a non-physical incident with an opposing player” after a game against the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Frank Crane Arena.

The club said the coach’s actions violated the codes of conduct of BCHL coaches and the Nanaimo Clippers organization.

“Unfortunately, Curtis made a mistake which he sincerely regrets,” said Brad Kwong, Clippers owner, in the release. “We are confident he will learn from the experience. Curtis is a fine young coach who has performed admirably for the Clippers in a challenging situation. We believe he is a good person with a bright future in coaching. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Toneff was hired during the off-season to be an assistant coach to Colin Birkas, who is suspended.

Bob Beatty is now the team’s interim coach, and served as head coach during the team’s 6-5 loss to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

“The Clippers organization is also taking immediate steps to bolster the hockey staff to enhance the continued development of the team and its players,” the team stated.
