In loving memory ~
Badovinac, Dako “Dan”, who passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on October 24th, 2023, was born to a large family in Zumberak, Croatia in 1935.
Dako was predeceased by his wife Nevenka and his daughter Denise. He is survived by his loving daughter Jude and grandchildren; Michael, Daniel, and Brendan. Dako immigrated to Canada in 1958, travelling across Canada to settle in Nanaimo. He later worked 36 years at Harmac in the Number 3 woodroom, which later became the Phoenix division, in which he finished his career working as a Sawyer. With hard determination and great effort, he was able to retire early at the age of 60. He loved to ski since his youth in Croatia, teaching both of his daughters on the Forbidden Plateau and Mount Washington when they were younger. He also loved to fish for salmon, spending most of his summer holidays fishing at China Creek in Port Alberni. In his retirement years, he enjoyed making wine with his grandchildren, gardening, and doing construction projects around the house. In retirement, he also enjoyed playing bocce with his fellow Croatian friends at the old Croatian Catholic Church in Wellington, Nanaimo. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, calling it the ‘best time of his life’.
A service will be held on Thursday, November 9th at 12:30, at Sands Funeral Home on 1 Newcastle Ave. Burial will follow at the Nanaimo City Cemetery on 555 Bowen Road.
Dako’s family would like to send gratitude to the staff of Eden Gardens, and Dr. Juralowicz, for their compassionate care and patience. Also to Dr. Kaban, his long-time physician, for his excellent dedication and hard work.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Canadian Red Cross, his favourite charity, as they helped bring food and supplies to his family after the war in 1945.Obituary
