Port Alberni suspends recycling during Highway 4 closure

Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District unable to transport recyclables out of town for processing

Don’t be surprised if your curbside recycling bin isn’t emptied this week. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and City of Port Alberni have suspended recycling collection due to the Cameron Bluffs wildfire forcing closure of Highway 4.

The ACRD is unable to transport recyclables out of the Alberni Valley for processing. The Third Avenue Recycling Depot reached capacity as of Thursday, June 8 and will remain closed until Tuesday, June 13.

The ACRD and city are asking residents to hang onto their recyclables for now.

The Cameron Bluffs fire remains at 254 hectares as of Monday, June 12. A status update on Highway 4 wasn’t expected until June 13 from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. A detour route has been established via Bamfield Main and the logging road to Lake Cowichan.

Escorted convoys bringing essential food and fuel into the Alberni Valley will be travelling the alternate route three times a day, giving priority to commercial vehicles. Other travellers will be placed behind the convoys.

Check www.DriveBC.ca for driving conditions. The detour map and travel advisories can be found online at www.tranbc.ca/current-travel-advisories/.
