Pets are free to roam once again at Elk Lake as the Capital Regional District gives the all-clear for toxic algae.

After months of being in place, the blue-green algae advisory was lifted Thursday by ​the CRD for Elk Lake, located in Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park.

Recent samples collected at the beach indicated a “below detection limit” result for cyanotoxins. The extended absence of blue-green scum combined with test results are good indicators that the bloom is over, according to the CRD.

Park users are reminded to watch for the distinctive blue-green sheen that can appear on the lake surface as the algae blooms are unpredictable and may occur at any time.

These blue-green algae are known toxin producers and ingesting water containing the algae may cause a range of symptoms, including headaches and abdominal pain in humans, and can lead to lethal liver damage in dogs.
