Doug O’Brien is the new mayor of the City of Parksville.
Preliminary results for the 2022 municipal election were released Saturday night by the city, showing O’Brien, who previously served as a city councillor, defeating incumbent Ed Mayne, 2,695 votes to 1,225.
“The people of Parksville indicated early on that they were supporting a change in the election,” O’Brien said. “I think that came through loud and clear.”

He added he looks forward to working with the city’s new group of councillors.
O’Brien said he believes infrastructure, water supply, housing and doctors were some of the important issues in the election, based on what he heard from residents.
Mayne said he was surprised with the results.
“I’m not sure what the people were looking for,” Mayne said. “Except the people of Parksville never vote somebody in, they vote out, is what the tradition is here. And I was hoping this year was going to be different because we’ve done so well.”
Elected as city councillors were Amit Gaur (2,310), Mary Beil (1,954), Sean Wood (1,938), Adam Fras (1,697), Sylvia Martin (1,559) and Joel Grenz (1,530).
Incumbents Teresa Patterson (1,249) and Marilyn Wilson (1,032) were unsuccessful in their re-election bids.
Also receiving votes were Lucky Butterworth (1,448), Karin Badel (1,366), Jeet Mann (1,086), Frank Bailey (876), Mike Kelly (823), Michael Pedersen (784) and Paula Miles (692).
