Staring backyard trespasser prompts call to cops in Nanaimo

Man transported downtown ‘so that he could access resources more readily’

Homeowners in Nanaimo were surprised by a stranger acting suspiciously in their backyard earlier this month.

According to a police press release, Nanaimo RCMP were called to an address on Benson View Road at about 6 a.m. on Aug. 11 after the residents woke up and saw, in their backyard, a man “who was staring into [the] barbecue and appeared to be high.”

The man was located a short distance away and told police that he had been walking the trails of Mount Benson all night and had gone into the yard to look for a lighter for his cigarettes.

Police noted that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs, but as he was relatively calm, the decision was made to give him a ride downtown “so that he could access resources more readily,” the release noted.

“Good call on behalf of the homeowner to call the police given the time of day and being uncertain about the man’s disposition,” RCMP noted in the release.
