Asleep at the wheel: unconscious driver causes ‘serious’ collision in Campbell River

Second such incident in a week say RCMP

A man who fell asleep at the wheel caused what Campbell River RCMP are calling a “serious motor vehicle collision” on Saturday (Sept. 16).

At around 1 p.m., police were called to the Willow Point area in Campbell River after a Toyota van had been witnessed crossing the center line into oncoming traffic. An astute driver in the oncoming lane had to take evasive action, but the van still struck his vehicle pushing his car into a power pole. Fortunately, nobody in the vehicle that was struck were seriously injured.

This was the second incident in a week, where a driver caused an accident due to falling asleep at the wheel, said Const. Maury Tyre. We cannot stress enough the need for people to ensure that they are fully awake and actually capable of getting behind the wheel. Lack of sleep can create a severe level of impairment that puts lives at risk.

The driver of the van was found unconscious behind the wheel by witnesses following the collision and emergency services were called. The driver was woken up and determined to have not suffered any serious injuries as a result of the collision.

The investigation into the collision indicated that the driver of who had crossed the center line had medical concerns that may have caused him to fall asleep behind the wheel.
